NICOSIA?His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Thursday visited the old Armenian Prelacy Building and the St. Mary?s church and the Magara Monastery in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus.
He was accompanied to to the old Armenian sites by Cyprus Locum Tenens Arch. Varoujan Hergelian, National Executive Council member Hagop Ateshian, Cyprus Church Board of Trustees chairman Sebouh Tavtyan and Cyprus Prelacy Executive Board Chairman Antranig Ashjian.
In the Turkish-occupied portion of Nicosia, the Catholicos and his entourage first visited the old Prelacy building and the St. Mary?s church, after which they toured the Melikian-Ouzounian school site, where a memorial for the victims of the Armenian Genocide is erected at the old Armenian center, which has been converted to a Turkish cultural center.
The Catholicos also toured the site of the Magara Monastery, where a monument marking the 1933 visit by Catholicos Sahag II was erected.
Aram I spent more than six hours in the Turkish-occupied portion of Nicosia, after which he also assessed the amount of work required following the unification of the island state.
Aram I was in in Cyprus for a three-day official visit, where he met the President of the Cyprus Republic Demetris Christofias, the President of the Cyprus House of Representatives Marios Garoyian and the leader of the Church of Cyprus Archbishop Chrysostomos.
